When you donate clothes to a clothing drive, do you ever wonder where exactly your clothes end up? You may have an idealistic image of your clothing being purposefully given to a person in need, but in reality, many donated items are thrown into garbage bags or bins (or forgotten forever in the depths of storage units), and those in need are often left to rifle through piles of wrinkled, disorganized clothing, hoping to find something to keep them warm--fit and style are a luxury. In our experience, organizations serving the homeless often do not have the capacity to provide clothing to the homeless in a way that creates dignity for this population that is almost entirely neglected by society.
If your first thought is that homeless people should be grateful for anything given to them, wrinkled or not, take a deep breathe, a step back, and think about what you are really saying. Even something as simple as a shopping experience reveals the value of a person in our eyes, and the dismal situations that homeless individuals continuously find themselves in perpetuate their feelings of hopelessness and rejection. No one should feel anything less than human simply because they do not have the means to find suitable clothing.
Recognizing that we can make a small difference in the lives of the homeless through something as simple as a dignified shopping experience, our goal is to gather enough clothing so that we are able to set up a fully stocked “store”, where clothing is organized by size and style, where the homeless can shop at their leisure and at no cost. We will be hosting this dignified shopping experience at Global Prep Academy in the Santa Clarita Valley. By donating to this drive, your clothes will travel directly from your closet to the racks here at GPA.
We Will be holding our first Clothed in Dignity Event on August 10th
